Are My Children Your Children?

An elementary question, you may think. I would have agreed not so long ago. But as elementary questions are given more complicated answers and truths we long held dear are given new definitions, sometimes we need to wade into the mire and do the dirty work so that hopefully others can walk a cleaner and better-defined path.

Today, I watched our commander-in-chief, Mr. Joseph Biden, declare to us that “There’s no such thing as someone else’s child. Our nation’s children are all our children!” Take a look for yourself.

Now comments like the one below tempt me to write off the statements as just another opportunity to laugh and again say “Biden will be Biden”.

As much as this is a humourous reply, in truth, the original statement made my blood boil.

When an administration like this tells you they can care for your children as well as you can, that is precisely when you know they never could and never will.

When the most powerful man in the country says that your children are also his children, that is exactly when you know you should never let him get anywhere close.

We’ve watched this man and his administration tell us that our children:

  • should be allowed to choose their gender at any point they choose, and we should just go along with it.
  • should be exposed to sexualized behaviors and performances and these performances can be classified as “family-friendly” entertainment.
  • shouldn’t think it’s strange when they’re forced to share the same private spaces with someone of the opposite sex, just because that other person believes they are someone that they are not.

Do you care about our children, Joe? Or do you just care that there is a large population of the next generation whose greatest influences (their parents) stand opposed to what you stand for?

The Bible shines some light in Proverbs 22.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22: 6

I think most people know this truth, whether they read the Bible or not. But there is an important piece we need to understand here.

The child doesn’t naturally pursue “the way he should go”. Much more often, he’d prefer the way he shouldn’t go! But with consistent teaching, proper discipline, and no shortage of God’s grace, the child will come to understand what they ought to do, and as this verse assures us, will not depart from it.

The scary thing is that evil people know this too. They know that if they can infiltrate the mind of a young child and begin to sew seeds of their own agenda, they can begin to train up this child in the way they WANT them to go.

You see, the American Left hates the influence that the family has for the same reason that pure-blooded Marxism does, for parents have more influence over their own children than the government does. As long as that is the case, there is a limit to their reach.

But when parents give up that power and take a back seat to the voice of the government, they give up their children, their God-given responsibility, and their future, in one fell swoop. Your children give up the graceful garland that your teaching and instruction is to their proverbial body (Proverbs 1: 8–9)

Parents, get to training up your children in the way they should go… before someone else tries to train them a different way.

Politics will continue to make the job of being a Godly parent harder and harder. As one side gets more extreme, the other side is forced to as well or lose ground.

I find myself caught somewhere in between. Of course, my greatest fear is the left, as they redefine reality to the best of their ability and embrace, it would seem, every kind of wickedness (Romans 1:29). But safety is also not found in the right or simple conservatism.

There can be conservatism without Jesus. But I can’t live the way I’m called to live without Jesus. I can’t parent the way the Bible tells me to without Jesus (Ephesians 6:4). So in the midst of all this, I look to Him and His Word to show me the way. There will always be truthful answers found there.

— To the Government (especially the way it looks now),

I don’t even have any children yet. But, Lord willing, I will at some point, and I can’t wait to keep your hands off them.
